Music Highlights (2025) - Alex @ MTR

Thank goodness for music this year. I've (we’ve) especially enjoyed the following albums:

Tomo NakayamaOcean
A masterclass in writing and production, and a big favorite this year. More people this side of the Atlantic need to hear Tomo and his music. This album hit home for many, many reasons — learning to let go of blame, loss, and nature are all part of this record. Goose-bump moments galore for me. Lemon House Inc., in Japan released a stunning vinyl version. A constant listen.

Kathryn WilliamsMystery Park
Beautiful. I didn’t think Kathryn could move me as much as she did on 'Crown Electric', but this is something else. Play it a few times and you’ll be hooked. I’ve never fully understood the Nick Drake comparisons before — now I do 🙂

Ron SexsmithHangover Terrace
His best album since 'The Last Rider', in my opinion. The song “Camelot Towers” is so clever and just one of many highlights — observational brilliance!

Bonnie Prince BillyThe Purple Bird
Beautifully recorded, with great songs throughout.

Photo OpsOpening Up to Strangers
Superb song choices — eclectic and stunning renditions of tracks by Madonna, Billy Joel, The Smiths, and more. Terry (Photo Ops) makes each song his own. A very special listen 🙂

Tom OdellA Wonderful Life
Tom with a full band. Great songs, and very different to a stripped back album like 'Best Day of My Life', but a superb collection all the same.

Cory HansonI Love People
Love this. Tom Waits–ian in parts, and more alt-country than I anticipated — certainly in terms of his debut. Solo album number 4 is something special. Thanks to Rob at Badlands Records in Cheltenham for the recommendation. Magic!

Mavis StaplesSad and Beautiful World
Typically soulful, classy, and deeply moving.

Also on heavy rotation:

Other favourites that would rank highly include albums by:

More recent releases I’ve really enjoyed:

And finally, definitely give Ryan Davis and the New House Band a listen — there’s some wonderfully mad Americana in there.

Streets of Philadelphia Sessions rather trumps all of these, but can’t really be counted, I suppose.

Just outside the Top 10 :-

Sparks
Josh Ritter
Brown Horse
Cory Hanson
Tomo Nakayama

Thanks as ever for recommending those last two!

And it’s a sign of the times that I’ve only got physical copies of two of these, even though I still love the feel of a CD.

We had a great evening a couple of weeks back at Jess Fitz’s “Miss Romantic” EP launch party. I know I’m her dad, but she really is a great live performer!

No concerts in the diary at all at the moment — probably just as well, as we need a new roof, and the car broke down coming back from Reading last week and cost over a thousand pounds to repair.

Neville Dalton’s Favourite Albums & Gigs of 2025 (in no particular order) :-

If I were doing this for your show, I’d take out the albums that weren’t released this year — but now that I buy so many, it would take an age. Several are remastered versions, but genuine 2025 releases.

Thank you for replying so quickly — and fingers crossed we still get a chance to meet. I wish you well for Christmas and the tough year ahead.

Albums :-

Red Sky July – Misty Morning
Probably a 2024 release. Pretty much perfect — not a sub-par track.

Katherine Priddy – The Pendulum Swing
Definitely 2024, but such a lovely album.

Procol Harum – The Prodigal Stranger
A few years old now, but a really good album.

Brandi Carlile – Returning to Myself
She can’t really do much wrong musically.

Kristina Train – County Line
Her best work since those early days.

Ron Sexsmith – Hangover Terrace
Feels like his earlier work, packed with fresh melodies.

Rhona Macfarlane – As the Chaos Unfolds
Possibly released earlier, but I loved it.

Judie Tzuke – Now or Never
Sounds more like her early work.

Kathryn Williams – Mystery Park
A beautiful album.

Midlake – A Bridge Too Far

Elton John – Ice on Fire

Paul McCartney – Flowers in the Dirt

Gigs :-

Lake Street Dive – Rough Trade East
Red Sky July – Folklore Rooms, Brighton
Red Sky July – Half Moon, Putney
Brandy Clark – Islington Assembly Hall
Rhona Macfarlane – Green Note
Emily Barker – Prince Albert, Brighton
Lake Street Dive – Roundhouse
ABBA Voyage – ABBA Arena
Karli & James – The Spice of Life, London
George Boomsma – Folklore Rooms, Brighton
SpaceAcre – WaterBear, Brighton
Nerina Pallot – Komedia, Brighton

I already have five gigs booked for next year — Red Sky July, Ron Sexsmith (Brighton and London), Kathryn Williams, and Katherine Priddy.

I’ve also recently ordered forthcoming albums from Elles Bailey, Katherine Priddy, Hollie Rogers, and Danni Nicholls.

DECEMBER/JANUARY 2024/25

Send us your album of the year list (2024) and we'll publish them here...

A big thank you to Graham, Phil, John, Dan, Mark, Rick, Neville and Kevin for the lists. A fine selection of albums... I'm sure you'll agree :))) Here's a few of Alex's (from MTR - we couldn't live without too)

Alex from MTR here - a few favorites from 2024!

  1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God – Proof if proof were needed Nick Cave still has something to say. Wonderfully produced and containing some of his most accessible songs to date.

  1. George Harrison - Living In The Material World (reissue) – I always wondered why Ken Michaels (of MTR show ‘Every Little Thing) said this was his favorite album of all time. I personally didn’t like the original mix. The new mix by Paul Hicks is absolutely brilliant. Nicky Hopkins piano playing is immense. George’s spirituality for all to hear. Class!

  1. Kathryn Williams & Withered Hand - Willson Williams – Sounds utterly effortless. Superb vocals and very reflective in nature, this set of songs both beautiful and moving. A certain highlight from 2024!

  1. Crowded House - Gravity Stairs – this album showcasing all of the Finn’s songwriting prowess – Neil, Liam and Elroy. A number of Neil Finn songs seem to talk of aging – the gorgeous first track 'Magic Piano' including the lines ‘If I end up forgetting what I have to say, you will still hear me humming on the last day’. Crowded House at there most psychedelic!

  1. Bonny Light Horseman - Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free – Original material rather than mining/adapting old folk songs as per the first release. Wonderful singing from Anais Mitchell (that goes without saying), but when Anais teams up with Eric D Johnson (from the band Fruitbats) then this group are in another league.

Graham here....

So onto music... sorry I never got organised to send in my favourite albums of 2024 to MTR till now. Had I done a top ten (in no particular order), my list would have featured Peter Bruntnell, Crowded House, Polite Company, The Lostines, Fairground Attraction, Bonny Light Horseman, Sarah Jarosz, Blossoms, Danny And The Champs and MRCY. My top live experiences were Bruce in Cardiff and War On Drugs at The Royal Albert Hall.

Have got tickets to see Seth Lakeman at Exeter Cathedral in February and Danny And The Champs in Guildford in March. Was tempted by Bruce Springsteen at Anfield in the summer, but decided I couldn't top taking two of my three children to see him in Cardiff so I would leave it at that!! Looking forward to the new Mary Chapin Carpenter release later this month, and then to our daughter Jess is releasing some new songs in the spring- we've heard the demos and maybe, just maybe, these will be the ones!!

I'm going to take your advice and listen to George Harrison while I crack on with paperwork and prep now. A friend who saw McCartney at the O2 just before Christmas tells me that he's listened to nothing else but the Beatles since that night!

Hi Alex.

I found it too difficult to whittle my favourite albums of the year down to 10, so here's my top 12:

Rainbow Girls - Haunting
The Montvales - Born Strangers
Erin Ivey - Souvenir
Karen Jonas - The Rise and Fall of American Kitsch
Swamp Dogg - Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th St
Danny & The Champions Of The World - You Are Not A Stranger Here
Robert Vincent - Barriers
Peter Bruntnell - Houdini And The Sucker Punch
The Breeze - Thin Ground
Ruth Moody - Wanderer
MG Boulter - Days Of Shaking
Lemoncello - Lemoncello

It's also been my busiest gig-going year ever, starting with seeing Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris in Florida in January and ending with seeing Dylan LeBlanc in a pub in Beverley, Yorkshire. Also had my first visits to SXSW in Austin, Texas, and to the Cambridge Folk Festival. So many incredible performances, but the three that really stand out were Dawes & Lucius playing together on Willie Nelson's ranch in Luck, Texas; Asleep At The Wheel with Brennen Leigh and Joshua Hedley in Cambridge; and Jeffery Straker playing a house concert in Great Easton, Leicestershire - all three utterly joyous.

Looking forward to seeing what musical delights 2025 brings.....and to the return of The Mystery Train Radio Show, of course.

Merry Christmas

Mark

Rick Here... favorite albums from 2024 :-

1) Nick Cave - Wild God
2) Bonny Light Horseman - Keep me on your mind/Set you free
3) Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood
4 Lady Blackbird - Slang Spirituals
5) Emily Barker - Fragile as Humans

Reissue

Gene Clark - No Other Sessions

Song

Bonny Light Horseman - Old Dutch

Gig

Nick Cave - Leeds Direct Arena. Jason Isbell at the Hammersmith Odeon came extremely close, but Nick Cave just seemed inspired during his recent run of gigs.

Already have a few concerts lined up for next year, Isbell at the Barbican, Emily Barker, The Delines, Doves, Oasis and Iron Maiden (though I might have a problem fitting into my old leather jacket and original jeans 😂).

Looking forward to seeing/hearing your list for this year and to hearing you back on the airwaves.

Rick

Kevin here.... What you've been thirsting for, the only year-end list that matters!

1. Brigitte Calls Me Baby - 'The Future Is Our Way Out'
2. MJ Lenderman - 'Manning Fireworks'
3. Kneecap - 'Fine Art'
4. Hamish Hawk - 'A Firmer Hand'
5. Fontaines DC - 'Romance'
6. Peter Perrett - 'The Cleansing'
7. Meryl Streek - ' Songs For The Deceased'
8. The Libertines - 'All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade'
9. Oranssi Pazuzu - 'Muuntautuja'
10. Sprints - 'Letter To Self'

Very difficult to chose my AOTY.. MJ Lenderman and Brigitte Calls Me Baby neck and neck,... but MJ just blew it with his self-indulgent cover of Bark at The Moon closing the album, would have preferred a couple more original compositions. But a seminal album nonetheless... A big Irish contingent this year.... Sprints, Fontaines DC, Meryl Streek, Kneecap...

All the best,

Kevin

Hello Alex.

Finally... my albums of the year.

A lot of mine were rereleases/reissues/remasters this year and to be honest, I haven't double-checked whether any of my "retro" records were actually not from 2024.

But assuming they're all legitimate, here's my top 10 (of the record 42 albums) I bought this year.
Four (two reissues - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' Back The Way We Came and The Definitive Croce - and two pre-orders - Red Sky July's Misty Morning and Reb Fountain's How Love Bends) haven't arrived yet, so are not counted.

1) The Promise of Spring - George Boomsma
Just exquisite. A superb selection of beautiful songs, each almost better than the previous, sung in George's inimitable, gentle way. (I've booked to see him in Brighton in April. If you're OK by then maybe that's another potential gig?).

2) Fragile As Humans - Emily Barker
Almost every year I say her new album can't be better than the previous one. But every year she tries to prove me wrong. This is as good as any Emily has ever released, in my opinion, and watching her sing some of the songs live in a tiny record shop in Portsmouth just made me enjoy them - and her - even more.

3) Good Together - Lake Street Dive
As you know, they're my big discovery of the past few years, even though they've been around for more than a decade. It's an interesting blend of pop, jazz, funk and harmonious ballads. But they do it not only with immense skill but also a marvellous sense of fun. This is their latest album - and my favourite so far. Going to see them at Rough Trade East in January and at the Roundhouse the following night.

4) Odessey And Oracle - The Zombies
I know it's an oldie, and I know you rate it highly. But I'm pretty sure this is a remastered version - two CDs, including one in mono. I love it - and am so annoyed they passed me by the first time around.

5) Bad Self Portraits - Lake Street Dive
One of LSD's earlier albums, but released in remastered form this year (I believe - last year at the earliest). It has some excellent stuff on there but fewer outstanding tracks than their latest one.

6) Beneath The Neon Glow - Elles Bailey
Relatively new to me, though I know you said you liked it. I'm really, really impressed at the quality of song and the way Elles delivers them.

7) iRobot - The Alan Parsons Project
Another group I've only just "discovered" in depth. I bought a compilation album for my wife, Jane, who has always loved them, and I was taken aback at the beauty and quality of the music. This is remastered (I think this year) and is an album I keep going back to.

8) Pyramid - The Alan Parsons Project
See above.

9) One Star Awake - Plumhall
In other years, this would be in my top five, but I've bought so much music this year that it only makes the top 10. It's a really high-quality album, Alex, and was performed superbly at The Sound Lounge in south London, where they supported Iain Matthews.

10) Deeper Well - Kacey Musgraves
Not quite as compelling as her previous album, but I'm enjoying her slight change of direction in recent years.

Special mentions for A Song For All Seasons, by Renaissance, whose remastered CD I bought this year, George Harrison's eponymous album, which I mentioned recently I bought at a bargain price, and Wilson Williams - which I bought on your recommendation and am heartily impressed by.

I hope you have/had a safe trip home and I look forward to being in touch again before too long.

All the best,

Neville.
